Red River Carts Leaving Upper Fort Garry. Upper Fort Garry, Shown Here In A Hudson'S Bay Company Sketch (1863), Was To Be Demolished, According To An Hbc Decree Made Public Jan.10, 1880. Erected In 1835, The Fort Replaced An Earlier One Near The Same Site Which Had Served As The Local Headquarters Of The Company Since Its Amalgamation With The North West Company In 1821.For Many Years It Had Been A Fort In Name Only, Its History Bound Up With That Of The Colony At The Forks Of The Red And Assiniboine Rivers. The Gate Was Preserved For Posterity When The Fort Was Demolished A Few Years Later To Allow Main Street To Run Straight To The Assiniboine River Without Jogging Around The Historic Old Place |
